The History of the Skull King – Page One

Here is the post!  I told you I’d post this.  Here it is.

The style is a little different as you can perhaps tell.  It’s also probably gonna be a little more intense than the normal comic?  The Skull King/Star King was a pretty intense guy.  But you’ll find that out.  Hope you enjoy the little break from our regular story!

Also, and it’s really just fine if you don’t notice this, it’s drawn at a lower resolution.  I’m sort of bummed by this for no good reason but I made the file and drew almost the whole page before I realized I was zoomed in at 100%, not 50% like I normally draw on David’s pages.  Oh well.  You probably cannot tell and that is okay.  The screentone dots will just be bigger.

Okay, enough chat!  This continues Tuesday and Thursday for sure… and then… maybe it keeps going for longer?  I’m not totally sure.  Keep coming back to find out!

The Sea Horse’s Wrath

Man!  This is cutting it pretty close.  Don’t worry though, I’ve prepared some more stuff and now I think it’s time for a little intermission from David the Treasure Hunter!

Starting Thursday and going for a few updates after that, we’re going to take a look at the history of the Skull King.  It was an idea I had and actually drew out a while ago, but didn’t until now have a great opportunity to wedge it in.  But this is a good breaking point.  Cliffhanger, I know, but that’s the point!  This is also right where I left off when I stopped updating my old LiveJournal and starting posting things here.  So now everyone is caught up.  History of the Skull King on Thursday and a few updates after that, and then ALL NEW MATERIAL!  We’re doing this.  Totally.

As for this page.  I guess it’s not really that the big momma Sea Horse is angry, it’s just that a giant beast like that kicks up a lot of water without even realizing it.  Also, I’m not sure how I did with some of the frames.  I really put this page off because I didn’t like what I had sketched and I didn’t want to ink it, but now that it’s done I think I could have done a worse job.  The nice part, though, is that I’m done with it and I’m excited for the next pages that I get to draw.

Woooaaahhh!

Fun fact: I was considering titling this post “Such Great Heights.”  You know?  Like that song that was popular five years ago?  Well, I decided not to.  But it’s kind of fitting, I think.

I also gotta tell you guys about Blip Festival in New York City.   I went with my brother Curt (check some of these links to his stuff) and had a great time.  It was exhausting and I am frankly glad to be done with it, but I had a blast the entire time and don’t regret a thing, even though I am sore all over and I think I’m getting sick.

Okay well that is all.  I feel like the accompanying blog posts to the comics are always kind of awkward.  I don’t know!  WhatEVER!

Loot!

Hurrah!  But of course you can’t just plunder and get away with it freely, right?  Well, usually you can but not this time.  We’ll see what’s happened on Thursday!

Also, I just got back from Blip Festival 2009.  It’s an annual Chiptune music festival that takes place in New York City.  I’m writing this before I’ve left though, so I can’t really tell you a whole heck of a lot about it.  I’m sure I had a lot of fun, though!!  My first time going to NYC, too.  AND it’s almost Christmas!  Times are crazy, you guys.

Here’s page 9.  When I first made this website I only had 12 pages sketched out and 5 or 6 were inked.  So I guess I’ve been keeping up.  Guess how many I’ve got inked and sketched now?  I don’t know, but I hope it’s more than I did when I scheduled this to post, you guys.  Right NOW it’s actually December 7 and I just finished inking this page right here.

Anyway!  I’m really happy with how this page turned out.  If nothing else, it really says a lot about light pollution in the modern world.  I love technology and all, but seriously the sky looks so starry when you’re out in the middle of nowhere (like the ocean).

So Captain Skull King actually has some mystical light-bearing powers.  Maybe it’s a secret of his mysterious origin.

Also, word balloons!  I’ve never really liked them, but putting text over screentone patterns makes it pretty hard to read.  I don’t know.  Let me know what you think, because personally I am not too crazy about them.

The comic is still going, though, so that’s good.  I think by January we’ll be able to ramp it up to three per week updates.  Yeah, probably.  Hope you’re still enjoying the series now and then!

Also, as a favor, could you tell people about the comic?  If you like it, get some other people to read it!  Thanks!

Hey there!  Check out the fort.  I wanted to draw it differently but then I figured this looked good enough.  I’ve been relying too much on halftone too, I think.  I think it looks better than doing a bad job of coloring or shading, though.  And it’s not THAT lazy, ’cause I spend some quality time making sure it doesn’t look like crap.

This is the last post I am doing right now on November 24.  Hopefully by the time this is all caught up, I’ve managed to finish more comics and get them queued up as well.  I swear I will never become one of those always-late webcomics!
